Unfortunately, all of these promises have been broken at a costly expense for taxpayers.

At the heart and soul of our nation’s economy are small businesses. Small businesses are responsible for creating nearly eighty percent of new jobs in recent years. As a former small business owner, I understand the struggles and challenges small business owners and entrepreneurs face in today’s marketplace, especially when it comes to providing employees with health insurance. One of the most beneficial steps we can take to help small business owners grow their business and, in turn, grow our economy, is to reduce the burden of health insurance costs.

At a hearing in March I asked Secretary Tim Geithner whether the US was at risk for losing our AAA credit rating, as a Moody’s quarterly report had indicated. He point blank responded that there is “not a chance” that this would happen to our country. I wish I could share his confidence, but given how things have unraveled in the past few months, I believe that America needs to take a step back and seriously reevaluate the way the government does business these days.

The 2010 Special Session closed with the passage of a two-year budget and an unemployment insurance bill. After much public pressure, the House of Representatives agreed to a responsible budget without job-killing taxes and significantly decreased state debt. It is a fiscally-conservative budget that reflects the common-sense values of Kentucky families who are struggling in this economy.

There is no doubt that Kentuckians have a lot on their minds these days. Our economy continues to be sluggish. Unemployment remains high. And our brave men and women in uniform are continuing to fight terrorism both at home and abroad. With all that is going on, it is perhaps more important than ever that Americans have faith in their system of government and the men and women they have elected to represent them. Unfortunately, more often than not, this is not the case.

Just over a month ago, Americans watched with some apprehension as H.R. 3590, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), was signed into law. Time and again, taxpayers were promised that health care reform would slow the growth of health care costs for families, businesses and government. Although the dust has barely settled, new revelations about the impact of PPACA suggest that, despite the promises, it will increase health care costs for individuals, businesses and taxpayers.

This year the average American worked from January 1st to April 9th to merely pay the taxes they owed to the government. With continued unemployment, stalled job growth and families struggling to make ends meet, one would hope the government would use this hard earned taxpayer money to create jobs and bring economic prosperity back to our nation. Unfortunately, liberals in Washington have failed to stimulate the economy and have pushed through a massive government takeover of our health care system that will further sink our struggling economy.
